My Goals In ENGLCOM (Draft)

ENGLCOM Writing Component is a critical course that I, as a Communication Arts student, am required to take up for the first term of my freshman year. Its objective is to educate its students the skills required to become effective writers. I, however, have always considered speaking and reading as my forte while my writing skills are mediocre at best. Despite this, I am still determined to succeed in this course. This term, I aim to achieve several things in ENGLCOM.

First, just like every student, my main goal is to pass the course. However, I will not settle for mediocrity. I will strive for excellence even though writing is not one of my strengths. Second, I aim to improve my writing skills. As stated before, my writing skills are simply average. But I will take it upon myself to cooperate with my professor in honing my writing capabilities. Third, I intend to develop a formal voice and know how to write academically. My fourth and final goal is to become a well-rounded and effective communicator. This can be achieved only after I have fulfilled the goals stated previously and have developed my writing, reading and speaking skills.

These goals, however, will not come true in a snap of a finger. In order to achieve them, I must be a responsible student. For me to learn, I must be present in class, both physically and mentally. In my pursuit of excellence in the ENGLCOM Writing course, I should submit all requirements and study for all the tests and quizzes that will be given to us by our professor. Nonetheless, these skills are not learned for the sole purpose of passing the course. They must be maintained to benefit me in the long-run. I can achieve this by keeping a journal or an online blog. I also ought to use my acquired writing skills in making academic papers for my other courses as well.

I have many goals for this term’s ENGLCOM Writing course. But I believe that they are all achievable if I do my best to be a responsible student and practice the skills that I will learn. Further improvement and learning can also be attained by evaluating one’s writing skills, referring to credible academic papers to know how a good academic paper is to be written and attending writing seminars and workshops that are offered within and outside school. All of these are sure to require hard work and diligence. But I am certain that I will reap the rewards of my efforts when I achieve my ultimate goal of becoming a well-rounded and effective communicator.

Nomad

I am a nomad. My feet have met the concrete, the soil and the marble tiles. My eyes have seen the country side and the urban jungle. I have inhaled the air of the South and the smoke of the North. Time and time again, I have been uprooted from the shelters I have known. But don't get me wrong. I may not have a house but I have always had a home.

I grew up in a place that is miles away, both in terms of location and progress. I was raised in a wooden house with a leaky roof, a marble-tiled bungalow, a spacious house with a large garden and a two-story apartment near a Church. Like I said, we moved a lot. Growing up, it all seemed like a big adventure to me. I even pretended that we were the Wild Thornberries. But then, I grew older and I grew tired. I grew weary of packing my life in a box and throwing memories away. I grew tired of the moving vans and packaging tape. But most of all, I did not want any more goodbyes.

So why did I end up here? I did I leave the only place I knew and loved for a strange land I have yet to discover? Why did I pack my life into a suitcase and say the greatest goodbye of all? The answer, I realised, is far simpler than I thought. It's because I had to, because it's for the best and because I wanted to. The old place was good to me. It raised me and nurtured me. It gave me dreams and it gave me wings. But it could only give me so much. It was time for me to take the next step, to take flight on my own. I know now that I am a travelling soul. My life is not, cannot and will not be defined by a four-walled house. My life will be defined by my journey, the story I live out everyday.

I no longer look for a home because I know exactly where it is. It is anywhere, everywhere and nowhere. Home is where there is laughter and tears. Home is where my parents share their love. Home is where my siblings tease each other and do not clean. Home is where new opportunities wait to be explored. Home is where joy and love reside. Home is where there are pain and strife. Home is where there are sufferings and strength. Home is where I find salvation and hope. Home is where heroes are born and greatness is achieved. Home is where the stories and made. My home is the world. Who cold have asked for a better one?
